Jefferson Parish is one of the few parishes in Louisiana that offers birth record services at three separate court locations. This is a real convenience for a parish with roughly 440,000 residents spread across communities on both sides of the Mississippi River. Each of the three locations has access to the same state Vital Records database and can issue the same certified documents. The clerk's office is clear about its role: it is "pleased to partner with the Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records to offer birth and death certificate service at three of its locations."

Three Locations for Jefferson Parish Birth Records
Most parishes in Louisiana have a single clerk's office for birth records. Jefferson Parish offers three. Each site is a court location that connects to the state Vital Records database, so you can walk into any one of them and get the same certified copy of a Louisiana birth certificate. Pick the location closest to you.
The three locations are:
- First Parish Court: 924 David Dr., Metairie, LA 70003
- Second Parish Court: 100 Huey P. Long Ave., Gretna, LA 70053
- Juvenile Court: 1546 Gretna Blvd., Harvey, LA 70058
All three locations operate Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and are closed on legal holidays. Because birth records from before 1983 may need to be updated by the Bureau of Vital Statistics before a certificate can be printed, plan to arrive before 4:00 PM if your record is from that era. The update process can add 30 minutes to an hour to the wait, so earlier is better.
Newborns must wait 90 days after birth before a certificate is available through the clerk's system. If the birth happened within the last 90 days, contact Louisiana Vital Records directly at 1450 Poydras St., Suite 400, New Orleans, or call (504) 593-5100. You can also visit ldh.la.gov/vital-records for guidance on next steps for new parents.
Getting Birth Records in Jefferson Parish
Requests are handled in person at any of the three court locations. Walk in during business hours, complete the application form, show your ID, and pay the fee. There is no mail-in option at the clerk's office. Cash, check, or money order are the only accepted payment forms. Credit and debit cards are not accepted at any of the three Jefferson Parish locations, so come prepared with the right payment.
Louisiana is a closed record state. Under LSA R.S. 40:36, birth certificates are confidential for 100 years from the date of birth. That means they are not public records you can pull up freely. You need to qualify under state law to get one. The clerk's site is direct about this: "Louisiana is a 'closed record' state, meaning that birth and death certificates are not public records. All requests for birth or death certificates must include proper identification."
If you were not born in Jefferson Parish but were born in Louisiana, you can still request your record at any Jefferson Parish location. The clerk's office connects to the statewide database and can issue records for births anywhere in the state. It does not matter which parish you were born in.
Amendments and corrections to a birth certificate cannot be handled at the clerk's office. If you need to alter or amend a record, you must go through Louisiana Vital Records in New Orleans. The clerk's office only issues certified copies of records as they exist in the state system. Amendments to pre-1983 records may also require extra time at the state level before the updated certificate can be issued locally.
Who Can Request Birth Records in Jefferson Parish
State law defines who is eligible to request a certified copy of a Louisiana birth record. People who may request one include the person named on the record; that person's current spouse; parents listed on the certificate; an adult child; a sibling; a grandparent; a grandchild; a licensed attorney representing the named person; or a legal guardian holding a valid court judgment. Notarized papers alone are not accepted as proof of guardianship -- a court judgment is required.
You must bring ID. The clerk requires one primary document or two secondary documents. Primary options are a state driver's license, state picture ID, military ID, U.S. or foreign passport, or a Certificate of Naturalization. Secondary documents may include things like an insurance card, utility bill, or voter registration card, but you need two of them if you have no primary ID available.
Under LSA R.S. 40:61, giving false information on a birth certificate application is a criminal offense. The penalty can be a fine of up to $10,000 or up to five years in prison. The person who signs the application carries full responsibility for the accuracy of the information provided. This rule applies at every parish clerk's office in Louisiana, including all three Jefferson Parish locations.
Birth Certificate Fees in Jefferson Parish
The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court charges the standard Louisiana state fees for vital records. A single certified birth certificate costs $34.00. If you want the birth certificate and a birth card together, the combined price is $48.00. That is $14 more for the add-on card.
Under LSA R.S. 40:39.1, a birth card cannot be sold separately. It is only available as a bundle with the full birth certificate. You cannot buy just the card on its own. Death certificates cost $26.00 per certified copy, and you can request them at the same locations during the same hours.
Payment must be cash, check, or money order. Credit and debit cards are not accepted at any of the three Jefferson Parish locations. Exact change is helpful. Make checks payable to the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court. There are no additional convenience fees or surcharges when paying by cash or check.
If you prefer to order online, you can use VitalChek to request Louisiana birth certificates through the state. Online orders come with additional fees charged by VitalChek, and processing times may be longer than walking in at a local clerk's office. For most people in Jefferson Parish, an in-person visit is the fastest option.
