Getting Birth Records in Iberia Parish

In-person requests are the only way to get a birth certificate at the Iberia Parish Clerk of Court. There is no mail option at the local level. You must come to 300 Iberia Street in New Iberia during the certificate issuance window of 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. After 3:30 PM, the clerk cannot process vital records requests that day, even if the office itself is still open for other services. Plan accordingly and give yourself enough time.

The office is cash only for birth and death certificates. Credit cards and checks are not accepted for these transactions. Come with the exact cash amount or very close to it. The fee is $34.00 for a birth certificate. Death certificates cost $26.00. If you are getting a birth certificate and a birth card, bring $48.00 in cash for the pair.

Death certificates in Iberia Parish are limited to deaths that occurred after July 9, 2012. The clerk's website notes this limitation. For older death records, contact the state vital records office in New Orleans at (504) 593-5100 or the Louisiana State Archives at 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, (225) 922-1208. The Archives can be reached online at sos.la.gov.

For pre-1983 birth records, the statewide system may require a manual update before the local clerk can print the certificate. This can extend your wait by 30 minutes to an hour. If you are requesting an older record, call (337) 365-7282 beforehand to let the clerk know, so they can prepare and give you a time estimate.

Newborns must wait 90 days before a birth certificate can be issued. The hospital files the birth registration, the state processes it, and once 90 days have passed, the local clerk can access and print a certified copy. For urgent needs before the 90-day mark, contact the state office directly.

Remote options include VitalChek at vitalchek.com or 1-877-605-8562, and mail-in orders to the state vital records office in New Orleans. Mail orders take 8 to 10 weeks to process.

Who Can Request Iberia Parish Birth Records

Louisiana law restricts who can get a certified birth certificate. Under LSA R.S. 40:36, birth records are confidential for 100 years. The Iberia Parish Clerk follows state rules on eligibility and publishes them on its website. The eligible requestors listed there include: "Yourself, Immediate Family (Current or legal spouse, Brother or sister, Mother or father, Grandchild, Grandparent), Legal Guardian (must provide a judgement of custody)."

An attorney can also request a certified copy on behalf of an eligible party. The key word in the guardian requirement is "judgement." A notarized custody paper or provisional custody mandate is not enough. You need a formal court judgment. If you are unsure whether your documents qualify, call the clerk at (337) 365-7282 before visiting.

Identification is mandatory. The clerk's website states: "Persons who apply (known as 'Requestor') for a certified copy of a birth or death certificate must produce identification in the form of one primary document or two secondary documents." Primary documents include a state driver's license, a state picture ID, a military ID, a U.S. or foreign passport, or a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship. If you only have secondary documents, bring two.

Under LSA R.S. 40:61, giving false information when requesting a vital record is a crime. The penalty can be a fine of up to $10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both. The Iberia Parish Clerk's website references this law directly: "LSA R.S. 40:61 a fine of not more than ten thousand dollars or imprisonment of not more than five years." Every request must be truthful.

Birth Certificate Fees in Iberia Parish

A certified birth certificate in Iberia Parish costs $34.00 cash. Death certificates cost $26.00 cash. Both must be paid in cash at the counter. The office does not accept credit cards or checks for vital records transactions.

Under LSA R.S. 40:39.1, a birth card can only be sold alongside a full birth certificate. The combined cost is $48.00 cash. If you only want the certificate and not the card, $34.00 is the fee. If you want both, it is $48.00 total, not $34.00 plus an add-on charge.

Need multiple certified copies? Each one costs the same flat fee. Many people request two or three in a single visit. Courts, government agencies, passport offices, and financial institutions each need their own certified copy. Grabbing extras now prevents a second trip later. Just multiply the fee by the number of copies you need and bring that amount in cash.
